Mr. Fields was
raised around bluegrass, country, and old-time mountain music. Although born
and raised on Chicago's south side, he's no "city-billy."
His mother was a native Kentuckian who sang her three boys to sleep with Louvin
Brothers, Jimmy Martin, George Jones, and Hank Williams songs. Cary attributes
his love for bluegrass to the fact that it's encoded into his DNA.
Spending summers with his granny in the small town of Anco, Kentucky (in the eastern part of
the state) Cary would watch the coal trucks roll up the dirt road, and remembers
hearing bluegrass music broadcast from stations in Hazard and Whitesburg, Ky.
He worked for
both Taylor Guitars and Deering Banjos during his 15-year stay in the San Diego
area. He is also a guitarist/bassist/singer who has played in jazz, punk, rock,
country and bluegrass bands, is a former member of the San Diego Bluegrass Club
board of directors, and a staff writer for Bluegrass Now magazine.
Upon arriving in Indianapolis, his first question was, "Where can I find
bluegrass on the Indianapolis airwaves?"
After discovering that it had been some time since Mr. Monroe's music had been
given a place on the central Indiana radio dial, Fields decided to circulate a
petition with the header "INDY NEEDS A BLUEGRASS RADIO SHOW," intending to
approach various independent stations to inform them of the demand present in
the area, and the rich heritage of said music in the "Land Of Bean Blossom."
Cary had no thought or intention of hosting the program himself.
While circulating the petition at a local bluegrass festival and collecting
hundreds of signatures, Tim D. (producer and host of The Free Zone on WICR)
signed that petition, and invited Cary to come on down to the WICR studios with
a big box of good bluegrass music.
The first installment, then called "The Grass Is Bluer," aired in late September
of 2002 at 2AM on a Sunday morning.
Listener response and the subsequent grass roots groundswell was so positive,
management soon placed it's popular "Friday Night Folk" programming in the prime
time line-up, with The Fields Of Bluegrass Radio Hour as the centerpiece.
